Impact of Agri-Horticulture

Our Initiative

Sustainable Development of Horticulture in Rural Mountains (SDHRM)

Sanjeevani, in association with The Hans Foundation, has successfully implemented the Sustainable Development of Horticulture in Rural Mountains (SDHRM) project in Kangra District, Himachal Pradesh. Targeting 1,500 small and marginal farming households, the initiative drove socio-economic empowerment through sustainable horticulture, gender equality, and collectivization, directly advancing SDGs 1, 5, 8, and 12. The project employed a structured strategy encompassing baseline assessments, awareness campaigns, capacity building on modern agri-horticulture techniques, demonstration plots, and direct market, government, and financial linkages. Farmer Interest Groups (FIGs) formed the operational foundation, fostering grassroots participation and leadership. To guarantee lasting impact, a robust sustainability framework was integrated. Local volunteers were trained as Para-Agriculture Expert master trainers, while dedicated Resource Centres and demonstration units continue providing technical guidance and inclusive skill development. The establishment of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) embedded smallholders into commercial value chains, enabling comprehensive backward and forward linkages. Sustained partnerships with NRLM, NABARD, and financial institutions ensure uninterrupted access to credit, government schemes, and market opportunities. Having completed its tenure, SDHRM has transformed regional farming practices, optimized crop management, reduced input costs, and established a resilient, community-led horticulture ecosystem across the Himalayas. This enduring model ensures lasting agricultural resilience and rural economic vitality.

Maximizing Mountain Agriculture Project (MMAP)

The Maximizing Mountain Agriculture Project (MMAP), a joint initiative by The Himmotthan Society (in association with Tata Trusts and The Hans Foundation), has completed its mission to transform agrarian livelihoods across 15 villages in Uttarakhand’s Chaukhutia block. Over its implementation period, MMAP empowered 1,500 farming families through science-led, climate-resilient interventions that boosted productivity, reduced drudgery, and strengthened market access.

Key achievements include: establishing community seed banks and seed enterprises that produce certified-quality seeds; promoting IPM, IPNM, and organic practices across demonstration plots; deploying low-cost rainwater-harvesting and micro-irrigation structures; and facilitating access to appropriate farm mechanization through producer groups. Local youth were trained as agri-entrepreneurs and service providers, ensuring last-mile delivery of critical inputs and knowledge: post-harvest infrastructure, agro-processing support, and institutional marketing linkages enhanced value realization for mountain commodities.

Critically, MMAP strengthened community institutions—producer groups, cluster federations, and Community Facility & Information Centers—creating sustainable platforms for continued growth. Through farmer field schools, Kisan Melas, and digital extension, the project built lasting local capacity. By dovetailing government schemes and financial institutions, MMAP ensured scalability beyond project closure.

This completed initiative stands as a replicable model of integrated mountain agriculture development. Your past support cultivated resilient farms, empowered communities, and secured a sustainable future for the Himalayas—proving that targeted investment yields enduring impact.
